Genesis 14
Two rulers came to meet Abram
By Venessa Holtzhausen
Gen 14:18 Then Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine—he was a priest of El Elyon.
Gen 14:19 He blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by El Elyon, Creator of heaven and earth,
Gen 14:20 and blessed be El Elyon, Who gave over your enemies Into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
Gen 14:21 Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people—the possessions take for yourself.”
Gen 14:22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I raise my hand in oath to Adonai, El Elyon, Creator of heaven and earth.
Gen 14:23 Not a thread or even a sandal strap of all that is yours will I take, so you will not say, ‘I’ve made Abram rich!’
The Sages identify Malchizedek as Shem, son of Noah. He was the king of the future site of the Temple, the home of righteousness. As the most honored of Noah’s children, Shem was made the priest of God in Jerusalem (Ramban).
Then we have the very wicked king of Sodom. There were two kings meeting Abram after the victory. The king of Sodom said to Abram to give him the people and the possessions he can keep for himself. Melchizedek, king of Salem, which is another word for Jerusalem, brought out bread and wine and blessed Abram and El Elyon.
These two kings represent YHWH and Satan. God send His Son to serve, but Satan, the wicked king of this world are only interested in souls. He does not mind how many riches you have, he is after the souls of men. God on the other hand brought the bread and wine, which is also symbolic of Pesach, Passover, and gave Himself.
Two rulers came to meet Avram
King of Sodom – King of Salem
Ruler of an evil place – Ruler of a righteous placed
Keep the spoil – Received a 10% of spoil
Type of satan/anti-christ – Type of Christ
Was he Christ? Melchizedek.
Heb 7:3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but having been made like the Son of Elohim, remains a priest for all time.
No biblical text to support the idea that Christ came at some number of earlier times in a myriad.
Was he an angel?
Heb 5:1 For every priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in matters relating to Elohim, to offer both gifts and offerings for sins,
Was he Shem – son of Noach?
He lived during that time. He outlived Abram. From the context Abram and king of Sodom knew Melchizedek. Melchisedek was a type of Christ. He was a shadow of the Messiah who was to come. Very possible he was Shem, son of Noach.
However, in the end there will be war again between satan and YHWH. Both are interested in souls. From the start, it was all about souls. So it will be in the end. Let us make sure that we make the right choice. Who will be your God in the end. Did you make that choice already? Make sure who is your God.
