Christ our Surety

By Venessa Holtzhausen

Gen 43:9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever.

In verse 9 Judah truly stepped up in being a true leader. This is the line of Christ.

Judah placed himself as surety for the young tender boy. The boy was still very young and that is why the Hebrew word for boy here is na’ar and not Binyamin, to tell us the boy is still quite young. That is why Jacob also reacted the way, he did.

The day Christ died for us, He became our surety. What happened on the cross is, that He took all our sins. The sins of the whole world. From Adam up till the last one to be born. The Law says: the soul that sins, must die. That is what Christ did. He came to fulfil the Law, not by abolishing it, as some sees it, but by fulfilling it in that He took all our sins upon Him and therefore He was judged, and died in our place. Thus, now Christ became our surety. When we were condemned to die by Law, He answered the call and the Father showed us grace by giving His Son, who is without sin, taking all our sins and paid the price in full.

Now He is seated at the right hand of the Father as our Great High Priest, interceding for us when the devil brings all kinds of accusations against us. Do you realize what a great miracle happened at the cross for me and you. Now we celebrate Christ of Revelation 1, a triumphant Christ. In Him we truly live! Without Him, judgement, no surety. The soul that sin, must die.

Amen!
