Gen 25:34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

What’s actually happening in this chapter is a ‘sitting Sheva’. This is when a family member died and the immediate family (sons and daughter) have to mourn the deceased for 7 days, while the grandchildren will take care of the food etc. The lentils is also part of the burial food, symbolizing the circle of life.

Who is dead? Abraham. In this chapter we can clearly see Esau’s involvement in family matters. He went out hunting. Then he even made a ‘out of place’ remark like: ‘look, I am about to die’.

The scripture says: ‘Mal 1:2 I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob’s brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,
Mal 1:3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

Rom 9:13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.’

God says that He hated Esau. What does this means? God had a rejection for the actions of Esau. God is a family man, cares very much about families. May we never be found in disrespect for family life. This is one thing the devil seek to destroy.

Spend today more time with your family. Call them up if they are far-off. You never know when will be the last time when you will speak. Life is short.

Amen!
