Genesis.
He is a Prophet
By Venessa Holtzhausen
Gen 20:7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.
In calling Abraham a prophet (navi in Hebrew), God defines the call he had given to him. Navi is from a Hebrew root meaning to ‘bring forth’. The Bible’s prophets are those who bring forth God’s words and teachings. According to Rabbi Abraham J. Heschel, the prophet’s essential task is to declare the word of God to the here and now.
In Ephesians 4:11, the office of the prophet is mentioned as commissioned by Christ.
Eph 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
Eph 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.
Remember that there is the gift of prophecy that can operate through anybody. A prophet however is not there to tell us that we are going to get rich etc. The function of the prophet is to turn the church back to Christ.
They were also mostly hated, lived a solitary life and warned of coming judgements, should the people not repent.
We need more true prophets of God.
Hos 12:13 And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.
Luk 4:24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.
