Torah Portion.
The Torah is read in a cycle throughout the year in Jewish tradition. This cycle is divided into weekly portions called parshot (singular: parashah). There are 54 parshot in total, covering the five books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy).
Torah Cycle
Here’s a quick rundown:
- Annual Cycle: The cycle begins and ends on Simchat Torah, a holiday celebrating the completion of the Torah reading.
- Weekly Readings: Each Shabbat (Saturday) morning, a parashah is chanted in synagogue services.
- Variations: There are two main cycles: one-year and three-year. The one-year cycle reads the entire Torah in a year, while the three-year cycle repeats certain portions.
- Special Readings: Major holidays like Passover and Rosh Hashanah have special Torah readings that take precedence over the weekly cycle.
